By Bae Keun-min Staff Reporter The Hankook Academy of Foreign Studies, a high school affiliated with the Hankook University of Foreign Studies in Yongin, Kyonggi Province, will greet its first 350 freshmen today. It is the first time for a local high school to conduct an opening ceremony in English. ``Our school was founded for foreign language specialization,'''' a school official said. ``So we decided to hold the ceremony in English.'''' It is the first high school in the nation to focus on a specific field through the cooperation of local government and a private university. Although the ceremony will take place in English, interpretation in Korean will be partially provided, the official said. ``The average TOEFL (test of English as a foreign language) score of the freshmen stands at 269.2 out of a perfect 300, which indicates the students have no difficulties communicating in English,'''' he added. All the students will live in a dormitory where they are required to speak English. They will be permitted to go home once a month. A total of eight residential assistants _ university students fluent in both Korean and English _ will supervise the teenagers from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. The students will major in one of five foreign languages _ English, French, German, Chinese and Japanese. Students majoring in English will study almost every subject in English, after a one-month grace period. The students have completed a six-week-long program called the FSGL, which stands for first step in becoming a global leader, prior to their entrance to the high school. kenbae@koreatimes.co.kr |
